Requirements for Naturalization
Those who want to obtain citizenship through naturalization must file Form N-400 (the "Application for Naturalization"), which must be submitted to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
In most cases, adults who want to become naturalized must meet the following criteria (among others):
- Must have spent five continuous years living the United States (meaning any trips outside the country must have lasted less than six months)
- Must have had at least 30 months of actual physical presence in the U.S. during the naturalization period
- Must have spent at least three months in their USCIS district or state
- Must be considered as having good moral standing
- Must have adequate knowledge of English and American civics
Adults who have been married to and have lived with U.S. citizens for at least three years are only required to have been permanent residents with continuous residence for three years. In addition, they only need to have physical presence in the U.S. for a total of 18 months, in conjunction with meeting the other general requirements. There are also different requirements for other immigrants who have special circumstances, such as applicants who are in the U.S. Armed Forces or veterans of certain wars.
The actual process of obtaining naturalization includes the following steps: filing Form N-400 with the required additional documents, submitting fingerprints to USCIS, getting interviewed at your local USCIS office, taking the English and civics test and taking an oath of allegiance to the United States.
